The rest of the categories in this forum are based on categories emerging from the book research. This one however is for anything else. General comments, rants, existential dilemmas... you get the picture.

  • Boards and Equipment
Skinny lollipops? Snub noses? Money bumps? Swallow tails? Diamond tails? Indys? Trackers? Gullwings? This is the place for any and all discussions on what was and is the best equipment for the older skater.

  • "Losing it"
Yeah - we lose it. Some more than others but we all see a decline in abilities eventually. Weirdly enough though - this is often counterbalanced by an increase in other areas, like losing street stuff but gaining vert stuff. Whine away!

  • "Normal Life" Integration
As youngsters finding time to skate isn't generally a problem. Hell - finding time for anything ELSE can be the problem! In adulthood though, we get responsibilities, lives, work and families. How do you integrate all of these?

  • Relationships
Does your significant other come to the park and watch the kids? Does s/he skate themselves? Or are they just happy that you're out getting exercise instead of getting drunk? Ever suffered Skaters Spouse Syndrome? Sit down, grab a frosty beverage and tell us all about it

  • Injuries and Illnesses
Every skater gets injured eventually. I broke my neck - twice! There are horrific stories in the survey about injuries and illnesses that stopped you skating a while. Share those here - we want to know the gory details. Yes, all of them.

  • Skating with family
Teaching the kids? Or are they teaching you by now? Family time at the skatepark is a wonderful thing. What happens there? Are they embarrassed? Or proud and think you're cool?

  • Tribal Culture
Skaters, despite being highly individual congregate in packs, and the bonds between them are immensely strong. Friendships made while skating can and do last a lifetime. Time to fess up and bro down with stories of how that brotherhood (and sisterhood) worked itself into your lives.

  • International
We got responses from 46 countries in the survey with the USA, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Japan in the top five slots. This is the place to talk about international exploits, friendships, road trips - anything where you've skated with others from a country other than your own.

  • Skating and Music
The two are intertwined, both support and feed off of each other. This is the place to discuss how music has affected your skating history. Punk? Metal? Disco?

  • Keeping the Dream Alive
Older skaters grew up in a much simpler time, with way fewer options for spending time. A common thread among almost all the stories is the amount of time people spent skating. Fast forward to 2013 and they have every option under the sun - BMX, inline, scooters - how do we as the adult skate community keep the skating dream alive and vibrant for the next generation?

  • Getting the crew together (again)
In conversations this morning with an old friend from France, I realized that many of us still struggle to find skaters of our own age range to skate with. I realize Facebook has done a lot for this, but I thought it might be a good idea to set up a separate forum for people to find each other and get together to skate in your own communities. Feel free to post, but I ask that the beginning of each thread be about the area you want to skate in. Like mine would be Burlington VT for instance. Have at it! I hope this helps.

  • Starting up in your middle years
Skating is undeniably attractive to middle aged people. The appeal of cruising down a street, flowing smoothly with body and mind working together to produce those amazing sensations is huge. So long as you have decent levels of balance, flexibility and safety equipment you should be able to master the basics of rolling around on a board. This section is all about the issues older skaters face when starting up from scratch.
